Old has become New

Am I the only one who has noticed that most of the styles and trends from the 90’s and early 2000’s era have made a comeback in today’s world, whether it is in fashion, beauty or even technology.

But what’s more fascinating is that it wasn’t long ago we were laughing at these trends because we didn’t think they were cool enough and now we are back to wearing them. A good example is the fashion industry and how flared jeans stopped being fashionable around 2008 because skinny jeans had picked up but today flared jeans are back in style. Then we have the bralettes and crop tops which were first rocked by the fashionistas from back then with one of the most popular pieces being the bandana top with straps at the back.

And let’s not forget the silk material which made a huge comeback mostly because designers were able to expand the material into many styles people hadn’t seen before. And finally shoes; the thick heels, super pointy pumps and square toe sandals are all styles from the 90’s and 2000’s that were copied and brought into the 21st century. Even though pop culture and trendsetters were key influences in disapproving the old fashion, they were also the first to rock these comeback fashion trends.

But one thing’s for sure, we can all agree there is a genuine appreciation for the beauty trends, fashion and music from that era. Especially when it comes to that old school music, nothing beats that level of artistry, the quality of music and ability to deliver a great message over a sweet melody. Today old school music has a strong fan base and a great presence in the social scene because in as much as it’s a generational thing, people still appreciate the quality of music.

This also applies to the beauty trends like glossy lips, sparkly eye shadow and visible lip liner. They were popular before, then lipsticks became cool and now it’s back to default settings. I wonder why we all of a sudden started appreciating styles from this era. Could it have something to do with nostalgia? I believe as humans we became sentimental about the clothes, music and trends from the past because they reminded us about a period in time. And i think the emotions those memories bring up will continue to inspire us to stay connected to that era either by listening to music or wearing certain clothes.

But interestingly enough, this return to the past has gone beyond clothes and makeup it’s also come to technology the one place i didn't think we would ever have to revisit our past for. This is mostly because of the technological advancement from the 2000s till date. Therefore I cant see how something from the past would be able to fit in today but behold, the Samsung Galaxy Z flip 4.

A smartphone but with the flip feature. It’s obviously an improvement from the first flip phones we knew of, nevertheless the concept has also made it’s way back. When smartphones started becoming a thing, flip phones were basically pushed out of the equation so it’s surprising that the technology is back and more so being welcomed by users without the judgement the phones held a decade or two ago.

This wave of old trends and styles is exciting and also a lesson to us on appreciating good things when we have them. Nevertheless, it’s amazing to see that fusion between the old and new especially in the fashion and beauty industry. But remember;

Nostalgia is a seductive liar - George Ball
